Is Sublette Running For State House 47, Is Pete Clarke Next To Leave?

In a shocking announcement Wednesday night, Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette quit the race for Orange County mayor.

In a statement first reported by the Orlando Political Observer, Sublette said that he was suspending his mayoral campaign. “It is with mixed emotions that I announce the suspension of my campaign for Orange County Mayor. There is no single reason I can point to that explains my decision. I considered many factors and simply came to the conclusion that now is not the right time to continue my campaign,” Sublette said.

He didn’t elaborate on what led him to the decision or if he planned to run for another term as chairman of the school board, though his statement did say that he would advocate for issues he cares about as a private citizen.

Sublette wasn’t running far behind in the money race for mayor. He recently crossed the $100,000 mark, just behind Republican Ron Panepinto and Democrat Jerry Demings.

Will Sublette run for State House 47 is the question many are asking, The OPO has been told my multiple sources that Sublette is deeply considering jumping into the field. He has the money and the name recognition to move into the top tier.

With him out of the race, that leaves Republican Pete Clarke as the potential odd man out. Clarke represents District 3 on the county commission and easily won re-election in 2016. With Demings running for mayor and Panepinto’s ability to self-fund, Clarke’s choice to jump in the race still seemed like a strange choice.

He hasn’t been able to raise much money, $36,511 at the end of December, which puts him far behind Demings and Panepinto.

Is Clarke next to leave the race? Is he going to catch hold of Sublette’s donors? Does he have enough supporters to beat Panepinto in the first run come August?

It’s enough to wonder aloud whether Clarke is considering leaving the race or if he believes that his chances have increased due to Sublette’s departure.

For what it’s worth, Clarke has given no indication that he plans to leave the race. This is speculative as Clarke has to resign his seat as commissioner to run for mayor. Why leave a guaranteed seat for something so uncertain?

As we get closer to Election Day, the race for Orange County mayor continues to get more interesting.
