Chris King Knocks Gwen Graham on Gun Control

At his press conference in Tallahassee this week, Orlando-area entrepreneur and Democratic candidate for governor Chris King slammed Tallahassee’s failure to pass universal background checks or an assault weapons ban and highlighted his record of supporting gun reforms.

King called for a ban on military-style assault weapons in his announcement speech. In Congress, Gwen Graham never supported an assault weapons ban, and her gubernatorial campaign’s initial gun safety plan never mentioned an assault weapons ban.

Here’s what they’re saying:

Florida Politics: Chris King attacks Gwen Graham’s record on guns

  • “Speaking in Tallahassee Wednesday, King said the party needs ‘a champion for gun safety and for a ban on weapons of war.’”
  • “‘As far as I can tell, Congresswoman Graham, when she was serving there, never added her name as a cosponsor,’ King said.”
  • “She didn’t.”

WFSU-FM Tallahassee: King: “I believe the nominee that comes out of this primary must be a champion for gun safety and for a ban on weapons of war”

  • “‘This is going to be a very competitive primary in Florida’s history and the Democratic party,’ he remarked during a meeting with reporters at the Florida Press Center in Tallahassee. ‘And I believe the nominee that comes out of this primary must be a champion for gun safety and for a ban on weapons of war.’”
  • “[King accused] fellow Democratic gubernatorial hopeful and former North Florida congresswoman Gwen Graham, of being less than enthusiastic about gun control.”

Tallahassee Democrat: King: “I believe our next governor must have a deep appetite for taking on the NRA”

  • “Orlando businessman Chris King, during a news conference Wednesday in Tallahassee, said [Graham] never supported the ban during her time in Congress.”
  • “King chided Graham during his news conference, saying she never signed on to an assault weapons ban introduced by Democrats after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, in 2015.”
  • “‘I believe our next governor must have a deep appetite for taking on the NRA and taking on weapons of war and trying to bring a ban on assault weapons to the state of Florida,’ King said. ‘And I believe records are important because they are prescriptive or illustrative of how you are going to lead in the future.’”

WFLA-AM Orlando: Governor’s Candidate Trashes School Safety Plan

  • “King also objects to the provision that allows the arming of school personnel. He says the last thing schools need are more guns, and he says he believes it’s not a serious idea, but rather ‘a manipulation by the NRA.’”
  • “King says lawmakers have failed the parents and students of Parkland, and he says the only way to change that is to elect a governor who will take the lead on guns.”
  • “[King’s] willingness to be outspoken, however, and to tackle many interests that had been deemed immovable has raised his profile considerably and has created substantial name recognition for him.”
