Seminole County residents will soon have the option to pay with bitcoin for their bills at their local county tax collector’s office. Bitcoin as well as bitcoin cash will start being accepted as payment this summer.
Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg put out a press release explaining the new payment option. Paying taxes by debit or credit cards requires a third-party processor, leading to additional fees. Bitcoin helps eliminate most of the fees required for a transaction.
People in the county will now have the option to pay using BitPay for property taxes, driver’s licenses and ID card fees, tags and titles.
According to the head of compliance at BitPay, this will be the first government agency to accept bitcoin and bitcoin cash. The new payment option will go into effect in June.
