This is your Intelligence Briefing for Tuesday, December 16th, 2014:
Mica still wins:
Let’s face it. When Jason Chaffetz, a 4 term Congressman from Utah got the Oversight Chair nod over John Mica, it was a snub. Mica had been weeding out fraud, waste and abuse aggressively in the region for the past few years. It wasn’t justice. And in interviewing the long time lawmaker, I recognized that this is what he loved doing. It was a shame he didn’t get the nod.
I should have know that he would not have quit.
Mica is now Chairman of a New Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, where he’ll in fact, be able to do exactly what he would have done with Issa’s gig. This is what winners do. They find a way to do the work they love. The dozen or so local Republicans waiting for the long time lawmaker to retire and run for his seat, will have to wait.
Old School Jacobs at Homelessness workshop today:
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs is a Seminole with an economics degree. And it was her attention to detail with numbers that allowed her to articulate an clear and understandable message to voters over how County Government works, and it’s gotten her elected twice.
Today, that knowledge with numbers was on full display.
During the workshop on homelessness, Commissioner Ted Edwards asked a question regarding the budgeting behind the campaign to end the region’s longtime problem. Jacobs calmly broke down every single avenue of revenue without even looking at the speaker at the podium. Most lawmakers just recite the bullet points or give general descriptions, this was serious knowledge. That’s why she’s one of the most intelligent (if not the most intelligent) lawmakers in Central Florida.
Jeb gets mixed reactions in Central Florida:
After Jeb announced he was exploring a Prez Bid next year, I made it a point to ask every politico to give me a thumbs up or down. It was about even. While everyone likes Jeb, they’re concerned he might not beat a Ted Cruz or a Rand Paul because of his positions on Common Core and Immigration and he’ll be the candidate the Tea Party will eat alive. Establishment Republicans might be scared to go for another moderate after John McCain and Mitt Romney. We’ll see.
