Progressives from all over Central Florida were in Orlando on Saturday night for the Contact Music Festival, an underground party that offered multiple stages of musical acts, art exhibits, and classes on political activism aiming to activate Progressives in the area.
The recent election of Donald Trump and the implementation of many of his policies was an inspiration for throwing the event.
“Contact is about uniting Orlando’s politics, music, art, and all of the burgeoning groups in the underground scene. It’s amazing to see them come together cross pollinate and to be under the same roof for one day because there is immense power in our cooperation.” said Event Director, Phil Santos.
In addition to live music in multiple genre’s and live art demonstrations, there were classes in communications and political organizations. Some of the groups involved with the event included IDEAS For Us, Equality Florida, Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Socialists of America. Many of the same organizers were involved at the Berniefest event that took place near downtown Orlando last year in support of the policies of Vermont Senator and former Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
While Orange County is a blue county with a majority of Democratic voters, the state turned red last year in favor of Donald Trump. Since last November there has been a spike in attendance at many events that identify with ideas that oppose the Trump administration.
“There are a lot of progressive groups who all have their own cause but might not know about each other, so being that pathway is a powerful political act and exactly what the other side doesn’t want.” added Santos.
