Linda Stewart beats Bob Brooks in Florida State House 47

Democrat Linda Stewart has defeated Republican Bob Brooks in Florida State House 47.

Instant Analysis:

I guess the former Orange County Commissioner wasn’t joking about those poll numbers! Stewart used her name ID from her two terms on the commission and a potent ground game to grind out a victory against Brooks in the Republican leaning district. Keep in mind Stewart inherited this race from Scott Randolph but still managed to pull it off. Stewart also benefited from the heavy Democrat turnout for President Obama.

But was there ever really a poll? Who Knows?

Transcript:

Florida Politics with Frank Torres, today we’re talking about Florida State House District 47, the race between Dr. Bob Brooks, Republican, and Democrat Linda Stewart. You know, a lot of candidates and the issues tend to meld together as the general election approaches, these two candidates are fairly far apart on the issues. Both mostly toeing the party lines, with their issues and beliefs but, both appealing differently to the independent voters, Brook’s said he would use his position within the majority to help all voters and to reach across party lines, Stewart says that she’s not going up there for any party that she’s going up there to strictly serve the people. These two have gone back and forth they’ve both got tv ads running. We’ll let the former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart go first, here is Stewart’s commercial

(Linda Stewart Ad)

Alright, you just saw Linda Stewarts commerical, let’s look at Bob Brook’s ad

(Bob Brooks Ad)

Yeah, so what you’re seeing are two candidates with two very different ideologies. The fight is going to come down to independent voters, and over which one you can trust more, to work on a bi-partisan basis, this is going to be a close race, this district leans slightly Republican, Linda Stewart has plenty of experience doing this, two terms on the county commission, she actually inherited this race from Scott Randolph, So it’s going to be a hotly contested race, very interesting race with two very different schools of belief with the issues, for Florida Politics with Frank Torres, I’ll see you next time

FDP attack ad more Pro-Stewart than Anti-Brooks

We can file this one in the “warm and fuzzy” column.

As we roll into the middle of September a lot of the State level races will slowly start running ads on TV and the web. This ad features the State House 47 contest between Dr. Bob Brooks and former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart.

Check it out.

Let’s put it on the Awww Snap meter.

If you’re with the Brooks campaign, you’re looking at this ad and thinking, “that wasn’t too bad”. Why? The ad pulls the references for it’s attack from an 11 year old newspaper article that is 200 miles away from the district and a house amendment that is 17 years old! The voters aren’t going to be able to track that down, and I don’t know, maybe the that’s what the minds behind the ad want. Either way, it’s not going to be difficult for Brooks to answer this one. That’s also a decent headshot of Brooks.

The ad does succeed in making Stewart look good though
.

It takes advantage of Stewart’s warm personality and the shot in the classroom is terrific. It is the second ad in a month to feature a candidate talking to a family in the same park but, I’m the only one who’s going to notice that and it still looks good. The best part is Stewart’s line at the end, which is well delivered and positive.

The Awww snap meter grades on the effectiveness of the attack and the ad misses the mark.

The attack is weak but the ad succeeds in promoting Stewart
