Orange County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Carlos Guillermo Smith announced his candidacy for Florida House District 49 this morning. The University of Central Florida alumnus and former legislative aide to Representatives Joe Saunders, and Scott Randolph had this to say about his run.
“The needs of working families of House District 49 have been ignored by Tallahassee for too long. We need someone from the community, who has consistently fought for the issues most important to voters. Issues such as job creation, fully funded public education, and rolling back social and economic inequality. Last month’s decision by the house to walk off the job without passing a budget, to expand access of affordable healthcare to 800,000 uninsured Floridians is a wake up call. We need new voices if we are going to govern this state in a responsible way, and I will be ready to do that from day one”
Smith told the Observer in April of the possibility of a run. His decision depended what action former District 49 Representative Joe Saunders would take after, incumbent Representative Rene Plasencia (R-Orlando) announced he would be running in district 50. This morning Saunders endorsed Smith saying…
“While public service may be in my future someday, I’m confident that this year there is a candidate for District 49 who can pick up torch and help to finish so much of the work we started. District 49 needs someone who represents the diversity of the district, has the capacity to bring people together, and has the experience and skill to make change in a process that is ripe with challenge. I can’t think of a better person to take on those challenges than Carlos Guillermo Smith”
District 49 is blue district that consists of the University of Central Florida, and has a large Hispanic electorate. Fellow Democrat Gus Martinez has filed to run in the seat but is a relative unknown in the political community. Republican Businessman Peter Vivaldi has also voice interest in a potential run.
