Sean Ashby weighing a run in House District 50

This morning, Public Educator Sean Ashby confirmed rumors that he could potentially run in Florida House District 50, and says he will have a decision in the coming weeks.

“I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and would like to see me run again in 2016.” Ashby said in a conversation with the Observer “It’s a big undertaking, it’s something that I’m putting a lot of thought into, and here in the beginning of July, I’ll make a decision either way on whether I’m going to run.”

Ashby previously ran for House 50 in 2012. He received positive reviews on his proposed solutions on education.

If he runs, he’ll square off against one of his colleagues, fellow educator and State Representative Rene “Coach P” Plasencia, who will be moving from the 49th House District to the 50th. Incumbent Tom Goodson will be running in the 51st, where House Speaker Steve Crisafulli has reached term limits. Plasencia actually endorsed Ashby in his 2012 contest against Goodson.

His remarks this morning was met with encouragement from Orange County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Carlos Guillermo Smith (who announced his own campaign for District 49 last week, story HERE),

“I’m happy Sean’s considering it. We need a well-known leader who understands the issues and has been a voice for the community. The contrast against the likely Republican opponent, a virtual stranger to the district who just came into town to run for office, will give voters a clear choice.”
