Richard Corcoran trumpets advancement of Homestead Exemption increase amendment

Florida Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran is cheering the passage of a constitutional ballot measure that will go before voters next year that would increase the amount Floridians could claim a homestead exemption from $50,000 to $75,000.

In a message to supporters titled “Major Tax Cut Passed!” Corcoran says…

“If passed by the voters in 2018, this additional exemption will be one of, if not the largest tax cut in the history of Florida at $645 million. An additional $25,000 exemption means real money in the pockets of Florida families. For just the third time in state history, the people will see real tax relief in homeownership.”

Local governments including the Seminole County Commission blasted the measure saying it would decrease the amount of local revenues needed for an optimally functioning municipal government and that funding will need to come from somewhere. Many Republican state lawmakers agreed with Corcoran’s tax cut philosophy and supported the amendment question on the ballot for voters to decide.

Voters can expect to see the question on their 2018 ballots and in the past campaigns for and against constitutional amendments have been stood up to swing the vote their way.
