Florida Governor Rick Scott has released a statement regarding Tuesday night’s gunman incident at Orlando International Airport, where Michael Wayne Pettigrew shut down Terminal A with a weapon that was later discovered to be a fake. He has been taken into custody by Orlando Police.
“I have remained in constant communication with City of Orlando Police Chief John Mina, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings,Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen, and FDLE Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks regarding the incident tonight at Orlando International Airport.” said Scott “I want to thank law enforcement for their quick response and efforts to put the suspect in custody and keep families safe. The people of Orlando are lucky to have such dedicated officers protecting them each day.”
Pettigrew reportedly waved the fake gun at officers and at himself in what Orlando Police Chief Mina called an attempted “suicide by cop” scenario. He is being charged with aggravated assault with a firearm on a police officer.
Operations have returned to normal at OIA. The incident occurred as the one year anniversary of the Pulse shooting approaches on June 12th.
