Rick Scott expands special session to include medical marijuana

Florida Governor Rick Scott announced on Wednesday, that the special session of the state legislature that kicked off this morning will be expanded to include a solution on the implementation of medical marijuana. State lawmakers are already in Tallahassee to sort out the Governor’s economic development programs and possibly raise per pupil education spending in the state.

Medical Marijuana was legalized by voters last November. State lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement on the number of dispensaries in the state before the originally scheduled legislative session ended last month.

“Medical marijuana was approved by 71 percent of Florida voters in 2016, and I believe that it is the role of the Florida Legislature to determine how to best implement this approved constitutional amendment. I am glad that both the Florida Senate and House are moving toward crafting legislation to help patients, and I have added medical marijuana to the call for special session.” said Scott “I know many members of the Legislature, including Senate President Joe Negron and Speaker Richard Corcoran, have worked hard on implementing Amendment 2 and I look forward to the Legislature passing a bill this week that puts Florida patients first.”

Legislators on both sides of the aisle had been calling for a special session on the matter. If lawmakers can’t find a solution, the Department of Health will be charged with the rollout.
