Tallahassee, FL –Ruth’s List Florida works across the State to recruit support and elect Democratic pro-choice women to state and local office. Last week the Florida House of Representatives passed the Parental Consent bill for minors seeking abortion. Patricia Hawkins Williams (D) #92 a Democrat, and Ruth’s List endorsed candidate for re-election, cast her ballot with the Republican majority in favor of the legislation. The following morning, Ruth’s List Florida rescinded its endorsement. “We are deeply disappointed to learn of Williams’ anti-choice vote. We can no longer support her candidacy. Ruth’s List is founded on the principle that women must have the freedom to make their own medical decisions. Clearly, Ms. Hawkins Williams does not share that position- despite her promise to us that she was a pro-choice leader” said Pam Goodman, CEO and President of Ruth’s List Florida. Ruth’s List Florida is dedicated to building a progressive Florida by recruiting and assisting pro-choice Democratic women to successfully run for public office in Tallahassee, in county commissions, in city councils, and for other key positions around the state. Since its founding in 2008 Ruth’s List Florida has raised $5,000,000, helped elect 169 women to state and local office and trained more than 1,900 women. In the 2018 cycle Ruth’s List helped flip 21 seats from red to blue. Forty percent of 2018 victories were women of color.
