Orlando, FL—Dr. Leo Valentín, Republican congressional candidate for Florida’s 7th district, made the following statement regarding the need for an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19, as well as Stephanie Murphy’s continued partisanship in response to the pandemic.
“As more countries continue to pressure China for an independent investigation, any responsible member of Congress would support and advocate for such an important step in halting this pandemic. Stephanie Murphy is instead calling for another biased investigation of the U.S. government’s pandemic response. This is all too reminiscent of her actual agenda and reminds us of when she voted for impeachment while COVID-19 was rapidly spreading,” said Dr. Valentín. “Being so wholly unprepared to lead and out of touch with the rest of the world, Murphy’s blind partisanship is the predictable result of electing someone more interested in chasing the spotlight than delivering results for her constituents. Central Floridians and our country deserve better.”
As was reported on Wednesday, investigators and researchers have been assisting Chinese officials as part of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) mission to determine the origin of COVID-19, only for those same Chinese officials to cut off contact and refuse to release updates. Meanwhile, data and maps explaining the possible spread of the virus have continued to be kept secret by the Chinese government, with many rightfully claiming that evidence is likely being destroyed.
Stephanie Murphy’s push for an investigation into the U.S.’s initial response to the COVID-19 outbreak, rather than an independent investigation into the origins of the virus, reinforces her already strong pattern of partisanship in the face of this pandemic. Last week, Murphy was interviewed by the Orlando Sentinel editorial board, labeling Gov. Ron DeSantis’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic as “incompetence” mixed with “lack of transparency.” In the interview, she claimed that a dysfunctional state government is standing between desperate families and the resources they need to “put food on their table for their kids.” She also called Sen. Rick Scott “shameful” for making the claim that many citizens were bypassing available jobs in favor of collecting temporary unemployment benefits.
