Miller Requests Employment Files from Commissioner Emily Bonilla’s Office

In a letter last week, Mike Miller, candidate for Orange County Commissioner, District 5, asked the Orange County Attorney for public records related to former commission aides who have resigned or been fired by, Commissioner Emily Bonilla.  In addition, he is seeking to understand why there is such a high turnover of employees in the District 5 office since Commissioner Bonilla took office in December of 2016.

“I am deeply concerned about the work environment and turnover in the District 5 office,” said Miller. “These taxpayer funded jobs are a public trust and we have the right to know what has led to so many aides being fired or resigning during her first term.”

A June 2019 Orlando Sentinel article detailed, “An aide to Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla resigned this week, citing a “hostile environment,” becoming the ninth Bonilla assistant to quit or be fired since she took office in Dec. 2016.”

More excerpts from the Orlando Sentinel article include:

Rosaleny Orie, who served Bonilla from June 2017 to January of 2018, wrote, “It is unfortunate that this resignation is due to the hostile environment that I have experienced, particularly working alone since November 2017 with all the responsibilities of the office.”

“As I tried to explain to you how I felt and how you treated me was demeaning…it showed that my feelings were not of value to you,” Martinez wrote. “You said, ‘I do not have time to worry about your feelings, that is not what I pay you for, the only feelings that matter in this office are mine. I am the commissioner and you serve to my pleasure’.”

The entire article is attached and can be accessed online as well.

Miller, an independent-minded, community focused candidate, is running to replace Bonilla in August. He was honored to be elected by voters to serve as a State Representative from 2014-2018. He represented some of the same areas, such as Winter Park, Maitland, and Baldwin Park, in the State House, that are included in Orange County’s District 5.
