State Senator Darren Soto has announced that his campaign for Congress in Florida’s 9th District has been endorsed by Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes. Himes, who represents an area near Newtown, where another mass shooting took place, references the Orlando Pulse Nighclub attack in his endorsement.
“Just over one week ago, Orlando experienced the most horrific tragedy on U.S. soil since September 11th. We were all stunned and wanted badly to prevent this from ever happening again,” said Himes. “Your State Senator, Darren Soto, answered that call by pushing for a Special Session to change Florida’s gun laws. Darren is a leader. He’s someone who I am proud to endorse and look forward to working with in Congress.”
Soto is running for the Orange-Osceola County seat left open by incumbent Alan Grayson’s run for Senate. He faces opposition from Grayson’s Wife, Dr. Dena Grayson, and his former Congressional District Director Susannah Randolph.
“Democrats across our country are sickened by these mass shootings and want to make a change,” stated Soto. “Last week, I made a push to keep guns out of the hands of those on the no-fly lists and the FBI terrorist watch lists. This is about commonsense gun reform. I look forward to working Jim Himes in Congress to make tragedies like the Pulse shooting a thing of the past.”
