“House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz stunned Washington on Wednesday by announcing that he won’t run for re-election next year.

Now the Washington rumor mill is swirling with speculation that the Utah Republican could step down from Congress as soon as Friday.

An aide to another Utah lawmaker told DailyMail.com on Thursday afternoon: ‘I’m hearing Jason will make an announcement tomorrow but I don’t know what it’s about.”

The Hill Reports The congressman had drawn ire for aggressively pursuing lines of investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of State while declining to investigate anything related to Trump’s business conflicts of interest and alleged ties to Russia.

The panel is one of Washington’s most powerful, though it might have less appeal for a Republican lawmaker when the GOP controls Congress and the White House.

He faced a hostile town hall in February, with constituents demanding to know why he wasn’t examining Trump’s conflicts of interests. Video of people shouting “Do your job!” ricocheted around around social media. Chaffetz later downplayed the angry protesters as “a paid attempt to bully and intimidate.”
