Watch On OPO: Richard Corcoran Debates Andrew Gillum Tuesday

Republican House Speaker Richard Corcoran has yet to officially announce his candidacy to be the next governor of Florida. He is, however, the first Republican candidate to debate a Democrat candidate, as the Gillum and Corcoran camps agreed to a face off on Tuesday. The 45-minute debate will take place at 8:00 pm at the Florida Internet and Television studio in Tallahassee.

The two candidates have traded jabs in recent weeks over immigration. Richard Corcoran is a strong opponent of illegal immigration. As reported in the Observer, House Republicans passed a bill banning sanctuary cities. Gillum criticized a TV ad by a Corcoran-related PAC. The immigration issue is sure to be featured inTuesday’s contest.

Although not yet a candidate, Speaker Corcoran is widely considered to be likely to announce his candidacy at the completion of the legislative session. Senator Latvala, who resigned from the Senate, is assumed to be dropping out of the Governor’s race, leaving Adam Putnam, Ron DeSantis and Richard Corcoran as the three most notable Republicans remaining in the race.
