State Senator Victor Torres and his wife Carmen were in an auto accident on Wednesday in Tallahassee that required a Hospital visit.
According to office staff, Torres was in the vehicle with his wife when they were rear ended by a truck. The truck then pushed the State Senators vehicle into a third vehicle that was ahead of them. Both were then taken to the Hospital and then later released. Torres’ car was described to be in “bad shape”. All three members are still in Tallahassee and a social media message by Torres says everyone is okay.
Torres and Mercado became the first Father-Daughter team to be elected in the Florida legislature following last November’s election. Mercado was elected to succeed her Father in his old House District 48 seat, after Torres was voted into an open Senate seat which includes much of the same area. Carmen Torres is also well known in the area and regulary represents her husband at events.
Mercado’s absence was noticed on the controversial “liquor wall” vote, which would allow major retailers to sell hard alcohol in the same store as their other products such as groceries. The measure passed 58 to 57 with Mercado one of five absent votes.
